Jaw Tip Prosthesis What is it?

Chin prostheses are implants used to improve the jaw structure for aesthetic purposes and to support weak or missing jaw structures. Such prostheses help to regulate jaw functions (swallowing, chewing, speaking) by filling congenital or acquired gaps in the jaw area. In addition, such gaps can visually affect the appearance of people and cause psychological problems. Therefore, chin prostheses play an important role both functionally and aesthetically.

The alignment of the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin is of great importance in ensuring facial symmetry. Jaw structure problems that disrupt this balance usually negatively affect the aesthetic integrity of the face. Having a small and receding chin is one of the leading problems of this kind. Small chin tip is called "microgenius"; this condition occurs when the lower jaw tip does not develop sufficiently. While there is no abnormality in other jaw structures or teeth, this condition, which is seen only in people with a small chin tip, disrupts the general symmetry of the face, especially when viewed in profile. One of the methods used to solve the problem of microgenia is chin tip filling, and the other is chin tip prosthesis that gives permanent results. While chin tip filling offers a temporary solution and needs to be renewed over time, chin tip prosthesis provides a long-term and permanent result.

Jaw tip prosthesis How is the recovery period?

The recovery time of jaw tip prosthesis may vary depending on the method used and whether additional interventions are required. Generally, in cases where no additional intervention is performed, patients are kept under observation in the hospital for one day after the operation and can be discharged the next day and continue their normal lives. Since mild pain or discomfort may be felt after the application, painkillers and antibiotics recommended by the doctor can be used.

Rest is recommended during the first week. In addition, heavy physical activities should be avoided after the operation and the head should be kept upright and cold compresses should be applied to help the swelling go down quickly. If the incision was made through the mouth, it is recommended to eat liquid foods that do not require chewing for 4-5 days.

The stitches after jaw tip prosthesis usually dissolve spontaneously within 1-2 weeks and there is no scar. Since the mucosal tissues in the mouth heal faster, the healing process takes place faster compared to normal skin. Swelling may last about 4 weeks and the desired results start to become apparent in about a month. Permanent results are usually achieved within 3-4 months.

It is important that the patient contacts his/her doctor immediately in case of any unusual symptoms, such as excessive bleeding, swelling, high fever, etc.

Jaw Tip Prosthesis How is it done?

Jaw tip prosthesis is a painless aesthetic intervention that can be applied to individuals with complete bone development (usually 17-18 years of age and older) and without problems in the tooth structure. In this procedure, two-dimensional or three-dimensional simulations are used for the intervention to be performed, taking into account the patient's complaints and demands. Thanks to these simulations, the image to be obtained after the operation is evaluated in advance and the most appropriate planning is made according to the patient's wishes.

Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, patients with high blood pressure, those who use blood thinners, those with skin problems and individuals who have previously undergone surgery in the facial area should definitely inform their doctor before jaw tip prosthesis application.

Jaw tip prostheses are usually made of flexible and safe materials such as silicone and Medpor (polyethylene). These prostheses can be in different sizes and shapes (plate, sphere, block, etc.) and can be easily placed with small incisions during the application. Silicone prostheses can be easily inserted and removed thanks to their slippery structure, which makes the operation less invasive and accelerates the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the chin tip prosthesis cleaned?

The jaw tip prosthesis can usually be cleaned with a toothbrush and water. However, in order to ensure a healthy healing process after prosthesis application, it is very important to carefully follow the care instructions recommended by the doctor. Hygienic care of the prosthesis reduces the risk of infection and ensures that the aesthetic results are maintained for a long time. It is recommended to use a non-abrasive, soft brush during cleaning and to avoid chemicals that may damage the prosthesis.

When are the results of jaw tip prosthesis visible?

Immediately after the chin tip prosthesis is inserted, the shape and profile of the chin begins to change, but the results become more noticeable over time. There may be swelling and slight bruising in the first few days, so the final appearance is usually clear within a few weeks. As the healing process is completed, the chin takes on a more even and aesthetic form. Following placement of the prosthesis, full results usually appear within 1-2 months and the permanent healing process can take several months.
